No Tongues "ici" Experimental Poster Design

A three week, school project (November 2022)

Our team consisted of four members: myself, Victoria, Emily and Clara.

My skills for this project involved using my graphic design skills to create a high-fidelity visual design Figma. I also experimented with image grouping, typography and colour.

In this project, I designed a poster using experimental-adapted techniques through uncanny and uncomfortable imagery, type and split complementary colours. I took feedback from my class teaching team and iterated work until completed.

The project objective was to experiment and design three posters that represented a chosen event, No Tongues "ici", from our research website, Jazzdor, a French Jazz Festival. This was established in order for students to display their adaptations and experimentation from research and understand how to create good design process.

DISCLAIMER: Jazzdor was not a real, paying client and was studied for research purposes.

THE SOLUTION

I researched for countless of image inspiration and visual design techniques (with the help of my team) in order to design three posters that showcased original and experimental versions of our chosen jazz event from our research website.

Alongside my research, I considered our team's precedent American designer, Dan Friedman, where I learned to adapt his design techniques of Typographic Scaling, Emphasis on Colour and the use of (disturbing) Imagery in my poster designs.

DESIGN PROCESS

Part 1: Image Grouping

With the support of my team, I researched and grouped Jazzdor's previous/current posters (yellow box) and took inspirations in order to come up with new image groupings and constraints that helped our research and design process (green, pink and dark blue boxes).

Part 2: Experimental Visual Design

To fulfill the objective of the project for the week, I spent a lot of time coming up with new designs as quickly as possible and iterated my designs by using what I learned from my image grouping and research.

Part 3: Iterating my chosen design

The green box displays the version I created that my team and I agreed to further explore our iteration process on. The starred posters were potential versions I created myself.

CHALLENGE: I found it difficult to create more iterations with different images in the limited time I had. I managed to solve my problem by helping my team come up with their own ideas (posters without stars) before discussing our final poster.

Part 4: Experimenting with Colour

After choosing our final version, I help my team explore different colour palettes on our poster (yellow box). I  communicated with my teammates and discovered the complimentary colour scheme of dark blue and red-orange favoured our research project, displaying the emphasis of colour (red-orange as potential focal points).

FINAL OUTCOME AND TAKEAWAYS

The final outcome of the project presented a new way of designing visual projects (posters) through an experimental lenses. The freedom through the three weeks of creating this poster supported my growth as a designer as it taught me how to work faster through my design process and to trust my designer instincts. If I were to explore this research project further, I would try out more images and typography within my poster design.
